DIY Energy Audit Kit Workshop

Hello All,

We here at the TLL are partnering with the Green Project for another class as part of the Green Project's Projectivities Series.  This time around we will be showing off our newly revamped Energy Audit Kit and showing you the basics of what you would need to know to be able to use the kit yourself!

The new workbook that accompanies the DIY Energy Audit Kit is chock full of New Orleans specific information for making your home more energy efficient.  After attending the class you will be able to use the kit that we have here in the Tool Lending Library to get a basic assesment of the efficiency of your home and have the basics for diving into a full blown energy overhaul if you so wish.

So come on down to the Green Project (2831 Marais Street) this Saturday March 19th at 10am and start out on a path to a greener home!

for more info, call the HandsOn New Orleans Tool Lending Library at 504 483 7041 ext 105 or Email Kaylie at kbirdsall@thegreenproject.org for more information.

Hope to see you all there

New Green Resources

Hello all,

We recently received some great resources from our friends at Global Green.  Our office now has (available for reference, not for lending) a guide to Energy Efficient Homes in Louisiana.  It was developed by the Louisiana State Energy Office and deals with the unique challenges of greening your home in Louisiana.  We will also be keeping a folder of one page references on specific aspects of green building like HVAC and plumbing fixtures and insulation and paint...    The information is also on Global Green's "Build it Back Green" (BIBG) website.

We also want to remind you of our Energy Audit Kit which is available for lending if you are a current member.  It is a great and easy way to see how efficient your home is.  And as always feel free to come in and chat with us about ways to make your home more efficient.

Thanks, and we look forward to see you soon

The DIY Energy Auditing Kit Now Available!

Dear Members,

The DIY Energy Auditing Kit is now available to be checked out!

The DIY Energy Auditing Kit is designed to give homeowners and renters the ability to conduct a novice home energy audit that will enable them to make informed decisions about energy-efficiency upgrades. We hope to empower the citizens of Greater New Orleans with the ability to grow sustainably.

This opportunity was made possible through the Market Umbrella's generous Crescent Fund in May of 2010.
HandsOn New Orleans collaborated with Village Green of the New Orleans Public Library to develop a modest energy auditing kit.  Users can take there results to local green experts who can make qualified decisions on the next stage of greening.

Thank you to all who helped and please feel free to ask about the kit!

Sustainable wishes,
-Marc P Santos, AmeriCorps 2009-2010

New "DIY Energy Auditing" section added

Hello members and fans,

We have a new section entitled DIY Energy Auditing which will eventually contain instruction and supplemental resources on how to conduct your own energy audit.  We hope to provide all the help you will need to give you a boost on the path towards green, economical living.

On the page is a rundown of tools to be included in our upcoming DIY Energy Audit Kit made possible by the Market Umbrella's Crescent Fund.  In the kit, you'll find some fancy electronics as well as some everyday items you might never associate with energy efficiency.

Eventually, we'll post our finalized how-to manual, accompanied by a user-friendly checklist designed and used by Global Green staff.  That way users can return the kit and head to Global Green or another green resource in the area with a concrete idea of what the next steps are towards energy efficiency.

More to come soon so stay tuned!

Researching for the DIY Energy Auditing Kit

Hello Members,

This month of May, we hope to be finalizing the tool list for the DIY Energy Auditing Kit.  A bit of research goes a long way as we uncover more resources for saving energy in and around our homes and apartments.  Again, we'd like to thank the Crescent City Farmer's Market whom this opportunity would not be possible without.

Some local resources you may be familiar with include:
We hope to be collaborating with these and other organizations, especially with the help of the Public Library's own Village Green program lead, Ella Stelter, who had approached us with the initial concept for the project!

Thank You Voters: We Won!

Hello TLL Friends,

We are one of the top three winners in the Crescent Fund! Nearly 900 ballots were cast so the competetion wasn't an easy one. Thanks for all your help!

Over the course of the next week, we will be refining our shopping list for the DIY Energy Auditing Kit. We hope to provide members with a user-friendly kit that will make energy savings a 1-2-3 process. No kit would be complete without some instruction and hopefully some coordination with fellow green-minded non-profits in the area.

Stay tuned for more development on our DIY Energy Audit Kit as well as tabling events at your local New Orleans Farmers Markets!

Cheers,
Marc

Vote for us in the Crescent Fund!

Hello Members!

Help vote for us here as we push forward with an opportunity to develop a DIY Energy Auditing Kit.

The shoppers of the Crescent City Farmer's Market graces three lucky organizations with the chance to gain up to $500 in funding for a program in return for time, talent, or treasure. This is made possible through there Crescent Fund which you can learn about by clicking here.

The DIY Energy Auditing Kit Proposal
Our Tool Lending Library has proposed to develop a simple, user friendly, Do-It-Yourself Energy Auditing Kit. Included in the kit will be simple tools that your everyday homeowner or renter can use to save energy and money. With the help of some local, experienced organizations, we would provide step-by-step instruction both in print and online.

View some of the proposed tools the kit will include here:

...In Return
The Crescent Fund is a "cash infusion", meaning that the Tool Lending Library must return the fund through time, talent, or treasure. In return for receiving the fund, the HandsOn New Orleans Tool Lending Library promises to give back 5 one-year memberships at 50% off the normal cost, 4-5 picnic tables and/or benches totalling at a $250 value, and a free workshop at the Tuesday Market on one of the following tasks:
  • constructing a backed bench
  • constructing a picnic table
  • erecting a compost bin
  • building a chicken coop
  • or building a garden box
Thanks everyone, and don't forget to tell your friends to vote here:
